Segway Segue

Friday
afternoon, Gwendolyn and I were ready to try something different. What
we found
was – well, a find. We took a tour of Birch State Park
on a Segway. Maybe you’ve seen those two-wheel gizmos that look like
some kind
of motorized scooter you ride while standing? Anyway, some very nice
people
operate a new sports-activity business at Birch, the first concession
permitted
at this park in 22 years. Called M. Cruz Rentals, they rent out Segways
and
high-quality bicycles for now. Soon, they’ll offer in-line skates,
canoes,
kayaks and a lot more, including healthy food such as smoothies.
Our tour
started when owner, Brent Wysocki, gave us a brief lesson on
Segway
technique. These are sophisticated machines, each with five gyroscopes
and a
separate transmission for both wheels. But they’re also easy to ride
after the
first few minutes, relying mostly on the transfer of body weight. More
importantly, they’re a total blast! What an excellent way to see a
place like
Birch, which is a beautiful Fort Lauderdale
oceanfront park. Segways move at more than
12 miles an hour at top speed but also can go off-road to slowly rumble
over
grass, dirt trails, sand, bumps and trees roots with no problem at all.
They
can spin circles on a dime, which gives surprising maneuverability.
Gwendolyn
and I were amazed at the technology and just how much fun that
technology is to
use.
Once we felt
comfortable on our Segways, Brent led us on an hour-long
tour of
the park. We began by rolling through a grassy field filled with large
iguanas
warming themselves in the late afternoon sun. Some of these lizards
were more
than 60 years-old, thick and dark with spiky head crests. Then we
followed the
paved road, often taking our machines up to top speed, feeling the cool
sweep
of wind against our skin and laughing at the sheer unexpected delight
of riding
these things. We saw raccoons and many more iguanas and a massive
“lofty fig”
tree, as its called. Brent took us on a narrow trail among the woods
and beside
tropical lagoons and near mangroves that looked like the natural South
Florida of long ago. I’ve
been to Birch State Park
many times, but I saw it from a new perspective on that Segway. When
our ride
was over, we hated to leave. You couldn’t ask for a more likeable tour
guide or
a more interesting way to view the park. Brent or other family members
also
will take you along the beach or Intracoastal
Waterway
if
you like. It’s a memorable experience and I can’t wait to try it
again. For
information, call 954-235-5082 or visit www.mcruzrentals.com. I promise
that
you won’t be disappointed.

Fellas,
I
really want to thank you for our Bike rental experience. Your easy to
find location (Lifeguard station 15#) and the ease by which made our
Hotel pickup was a delight.
Because
of you, my wife ,sister and I were able to see more of
Lauderdale beach, and its nearer towns.
Your
bikes are well maintained and the park allows for we older birds to
practice our peddling skills before heading out. We highly
recommend your service and wish more vacation cities provided
bikes for rental. What a great way to see the beach. I'll be back for
sure.
Thank
you again,
Steven

Dear
Brent,
My husband and I arrived rather late last Saturday for bike rentals and
you saved the day. Not only did you come up with two bikes,
you allowed us an additional hour at no charge. We had a
glorious day riding to Los Olas, via Victoria Park and 19th street and
then took in the raw nature at the park. Thank you for your
attention and generosity not often found in this economic
climate. We are grateful and will always think of you when
recalling our time in Fort Lauderdale. We shall also
recommend your service to anyone headed down to So. Florida.
With much gratitude,
Jackie

Dear Mr. Wysocki:
It
is with immense gratitude that I write to you, a prominent business and
civic leader in the Broward County community. On behalf or the Emerge
Broward Executive Board and the general membership, I would like to
thank you for helping to facilitate the Segways, Canoes & More
Event on October 11, 2008.
This
event was undoubtedly a huge success. Our members were privileged to
enjoy a 30 minute guided Segway tour through Hugh Taylor Birch State
Park while simultaneously networking with one another in a unique and
relaxing atmosphere. Thank you for taking a pro-active role inj our
community and facilitating this event for Emerge Broward.
Sincerely,
-

Dear Brent,
I
wanted to personally thank you for assisting me in planning the Emerge
Broward event this past weekend. You were an absolute pleasure to work
with and I really appreciated you helping us and with the cost of the
event. Everyone raved about the Segways! Again, thank you for your
time. I look forward to working with you again.

M Cruz Rentals
provided a memorable last day in Fort Lauderdale for my son and
me. I was hoping to rent a bike and trailer for my
three-year-old
son and received the recommendation of the hotel I was staying in to
visit this rental shop. Brent and his staff were generous and
very helpful. We first cruised around on a "Buddy Bike,"
which
was an incredible experience. It allowed me to have my son
right
in front of me while we visited the Hugh Taylor Birch State
Park.
When my son became tired, they let me switch the bike out with a bike
and trailer. Just as Brent promised, my son fell asleep
within
minutes, and I explored Fort Lauderdale on two wheels while my son
napped behind me.
The
Buddy Bike is great for toddlers that have some balance, but cannot
ride a bike on their own. M Cruz Rentals is a fantastic way
to
explore Fort Lauderdale.
Thank
you!
